Driver Responsibilities and Key Things to Know
What every driver should understand before, during, and after a TripCity rental.
Overview
Renting on TripCity comes with clear responsibilities. Understanding these expectations helps prevent disputes, fees, and account issues.
This article covers high-level rules every driver should know. We recommend reviewing related articles for a more deeper dive on the rules.
Inspect the Vehicle at Check-In
- Inspect the vehicle before check-in.
- Review condition, cleanliness, fuel or battery level, and readiness.
If there is an issue at pickup:
- Cancel the booking, or
- Work directly with the owner on a solution such as a car swap.
Report Vehicle Issues Immediately
- Report any vehicle issues as soon as they arise to the owner.
- Issues reported after the rental ends will have to be handled directly with the owner.
Only Authorized Drivers May Drive
- Only the driver listed on the rental agreement may operate the vehicle.
- Allowing anyone else to drive is a violation of platform rules.
Return the Vehicle Properly
When returning the vehicle, you must:
- Return all keys and access devices.
- Return the vehicle with fuel or battery level matching pickup.
- Return the vehicle clean, in the same condition it was provided.
Failure to meet these requirements may result in incidental charges.
Accidents and Physical Damage
- Report accidents or physical damage immediately.
- Notify the owner and file a police report.
- Send all physical damage incidents to claims@tripcity.com
Payment Rules
- Payments must be made with a valid debit or credit card in your name.
- Split payments and payment plans are not allowed.
Late Returns Have Consequences
- Late returns should not happen.
- If you anticipate being late, communicate with the owner before the return time.
If you are late, the owner may:
- Disable the vehicle
- Recover the vehicle
- Report the vehicle stolen if you are unresponsive
Post-Rental Adjustments and Refunds
- All post-rental adjustments must be handled directly with the owner.
- The owner must contact TripCity to authorize any changes.
Early Returns Require Documentation
- Early returns require timestamped documentation submitted by email.
- Adjustments cannot be reviewed until the rental is completed by the owner.
Rental Completion
- Only the owner can complete the rental in TripCity.
- Drivers must contact the owner once the vehicle is returned.
Reviews Matter
- Leave a review after your rental.
- Reviews document your experience and help improve the marketplace.
Outstanding Balances
- To rent again, you must first settle all outstanding balances.
- This includes:
- Late days
- Incidentals (ex: gas, cleaning, tickets, tolls, keys, etc)
Unresolved balances will block future bookings.
Security Deposits
- TripCity does not collect deposits.
- Owners might request one themselves so we advice that you do your own due diligence before moving forward or not with a booking. TripCity will not intervene with any deposits.
