Late Rental Charges for Drivers
What happens when your rental is overdue, how late fees are applied, and what to expect when extending.
Overview
TripCity applies automated late rental charges to make overdue rental billing more consistent and transparent.
There are two main late fee situations:
- A $5 Short-Delay Late Fee when you extend more than 4 hours late but less than 24 hours late.
- A $10 Daily Auto Late Fee once your rental reaches 24 hours or more overdue.
These charges are separate from the existing $25 Daily Late-End Fee that may apply when a rental ends late.
Short-Delay Late FeeIf your rental is:
- More than 4 hours late
- Less than 24 hours late
- Still eligible for an extension
A $5 Short-Delay Late Fee will appear during extension checkout.
You will see this fee before confirming payment.
This gives you a clear view of the additional cost before extending.
Rentals 24 Hours or More LateOnce your rental reaches 24 hours overdue, TripCity may automatically attempt to collect:
- Additional rental charges
- A $10 Daily Auto Late Fee
- Applicable transaction fees
- Applicable taxes
The system reviews overdue rentals regularly and attempts payment using the payment method on file.
What Happens if Payment Fails
If the payment attempt is unsuccessful:
- The failed payment is recorded.
- Your outstanding balance remains due.
- You may lose the ability to extend the rental.
- Your account may be restricted from future bookings.
You remain responsible for returning the vehicle and communicating with the owner.
Avoid Late Charges
Late rentals should be avoided whenever possible.
Before your scheduled return time:
- Submit your extension early.
- Make sure your payment method has sufficient funds.
- Contact the owner immediately if there is a delay.
- Do not assume an extension has been approved until it appears in your dashboard.
Owner Rights When a Rental Is Late
The owner may:
- Request the vehicle back immediately.
- Block extensions when payments are overdue.
- Disable or recover the vehicle if you become unresponsive.
- Report the vehicle stolen if you fail to return it or communicate.
Your responsibility to return the vehicle continues even if a payment fails.
Itemized Charges
Late charges are recorded separately so you can understand what you are paying.
You may see line items for:
- Additional rental days
- $5 Short-Delay Late Fee
- $10 Daily Auto Late Fee
- $25 Daily Late-End Fee
- Transaction fees
- Applicable taxes
